I just find it shameful that they build "new" on open land as opposed to the town maybe forcing them to renovate the vacated grocery stores. I pass 4 grocery stores on my way to my "choice" supermarket that is still only 2 miles away. It isn't like building a new supermarket "nearby" makes a difference to most people. it isn't like building a new grocery store results in more customers overall. If Lidl gets it's act together, it'll be back, Walmart is Walmart, etc. Publix and Teeter will do what they must to keep their grip. I'm sure Wegmans will start leaking closer soon, they're already in Raleigh. Fresh Market for instance isn't even in Charleston yet. Hated losing Bilo downtown, that created a big hole, but in general the market is flooded with stores with more to come.

Conversely downtown and parts of North Chas, etc are way under and undeserved. I forgot what the exact number is for average grocer store per residents, but I know for a fact that Mount Pleasant and other parts of Charleston and other cities in SC like Greenville are getting way over the average and are saturated. When I lived in a suburb of NYC - a "town" with more than twice the density population of summerville, there was 2 stores in a 7 mile radius - and those 7 miles took a lot longer to traverse than here. No, that would be an exaggeration.įrom my home, all within less than 4 miles driving distance there are: I think they nearly out number churches now. The number of grocery stores in my area of Summerville is just ridiculous.

I just hope it doesn't turn into a super thrift store or something of that nature. The area of 78 between Ladson Rd and 26 is going to see massive growth over the next few years, so hopefully that building won't stay vacant for long. If you look at a map, that spot sits exactly halfway between the Goose Creek and Old Trolley Publix locations, which is why I thought they'd be a great fit. I regularly shop at the Neighborhood Market, but that's just because I order my regular staples online and it's right down the road from where I work. It's hard to believe the Bilo there is considered a liability, unless they've priced themselves out of business. Contrast that with Ladson Rd, where you have a Walmart Neighborhood Market and Food Lion practically across the street from eachother, with Publix at Old Trolley & Midland not too far away and Aldi at Ladson and Dorchester. It is amazing that the entire University Boulevard/Route 78 corridor, which is already a food desert, is going to lose the only grocery store it has on the far end.Ī definite opportunity for somebody.
